Let’s start big picture. What’s the vibe here?
When you picture a Southern square, you probably imagine something like Atlanta‘s Marietta Square with its central fountain surrounded by stately trees, while buzzy shops and restaurants line the perimeter. There’s even a historic theater (the Strand) rounding out the old timey feel. The square is the gathering spot of Marietta, a town less than 30-minutes northwest of Atlanta, and it’s the go-to place for a taste of picturesque Southern charm and history (a Civil War battle started here and Sherman marched through). On Saturdays, about 65-vendors set up around the square for the farmers market and on any given day you’re likely to see families and friends and strolling around for bites at Marietta Square Market (a food fall), Australian Bakery, or Tuesday Coffee.
Any standout features or must-sees?
Plan on hanging out in the center of the square known as Glover Park. The fountain makes a stunning photo backdrop, and gazebos add shade as well as charm. Kids love the train engine playground with a replica locomotive. It’s an ideal spot to sip a coffee and people watch or have a picnic. Concerts and performances are also held on the park’s stage throughout the year.
Was it easy to get around?
The trickiest part of visiting Marietta Square is the parking. There are plenty of parking spots around the square’s perimeter but those, understandably, fill up quickly. Venture to the side streets to find paid lots and parking garages. Once you park, it’s easy to find your way around. If you need to sit a moment, there are plenty of benches throughout.
All said and done, what—and who—is this best for?
Anyone who wants a taste of small town charm without straying too far from the city will enjoy Marietta. By day, the arts and antique lovers enjoy shops like DK Gallery and Antiques on the Square. And at night, you can take a ghost tour by trolley or delight in one of Brian So’s seasonally-driven, minimalist plated dishes at Spring.
